Macau holds a unique place as the top destination for gambling tourism in East Asia. But as a tourist resort its importance is not insignificant. It has expanded and developed greatly on reclaimed land from the sea. Situated on the southern coast of china and surrounded by the South China Sea it is 60 km west of Hong Kong. Its humid subtropical climate encourages plenty of rainfall while the temperatures range from 12 to 31 degrees. The main language is Cantonese. We can find a combination of Chinese and Portuguese culture resulting in many festivals, holidays and events. Macau Grand Prix is the biggest event amongst them.
Macau has a separate immigration regime requiring all travellers to go through immigration and customs checks on arrival as well as a visa. Macau International Airport is off the shore of Talpa island.

Macau with its churches, temples, fortresses and old buildings of Portuguese and Chinese origins is worth walking around. Gambling of course remains a big draw for many tourists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Generally speaking, the best time to visit Macau is from October to December (autumn and winter), when the weather is both dry and not too hot. In the spring, the weather tends to be warmer and foggy, while summers are hot and rainy. Of course, if you plan to spend most of your time enjoying Macau’s famous casinos, excellent shopping and other indoor attractions, then there really is no bad time to visit.
The local currency is the pataca (MOP$, M$ or ptca), which is only accepted in Macau. Also freely accepted is the HK dollar, which means you are able to use whichever currency you prefer. If you are planning to visit Hong Kong, it may be easiest to get only HK dollars – though it’s worth bearing in mind that certain coins might not be accepted in Macau. If you do get patacas, try to use them all before leaving
Macau is the perfect holiday destination for tourists seeking a wide range of attractions. Most famous for being the world’s gambling capital, boasting a range of casinos to rival even Las Vegas, this city peninsula also has a lot of history, some excellent museums and galleries, and exciting cuisine. Plus, there’s also the possibility of taking the ferry over to Hong Kong for a day or two, adding yet more variety. While the casinos are what most travellers come here for, there are lots of others options too. One of the best things to do is to explore the destination’s colonial past. The Portuguese arrived in the 16th century, and it became the first and only Chinese city to be colonised by Europe. As a result, it has a medley of Portuguese and Asian features, including Baroque churches, mansions, fortressing and Portuguese cuisine. Don’t miss the chance to explore Macau’s historic centre, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, home to wonderful landmarks like Senado Square.
It takes 22 minutes by car and 55 min by ferry to travel from Hong Kong to Macau.
Cantonese, Mandarin, and a little bit of English and Portuguese are the major languages spoken in Macau.
Majority of tourists visit Macau purely because of its casinos, hoping to win something big. Casino is the primary attraction and driving factor. But obviously, Casinos are not charity houses and ensure that they always make more money. Your probability of returning home richer is near zero, so I have always avoided Casinos even though I had chance and exposure in Singapore, Copenhagen and many other places. If you have decided to lose a small amount and experience may be it is fine, but if you fall into the temptation of recovering lost money by playing even more, (a temptation that can grow stronger because of the ambiance, good looking girls around, ATM machine in the corner and some wild belief that luck is on your side) then be assured you are doomed. Leave your cards behind while visiting Casinos. Besides casino, other attractions in Macau are: Giant Panda Pavilion, Macau Tower, Guia fort, Ruin of St Pauls, Senado Square, China Border, Grand Prix Museum, Kum Iam temple etc. Good to explore but not so sure if you should travel all the way just for these. Most people club Macau with Hong Kong, which makes more economical sense.
